1 August, 2025

Today we honour the birthday of the late Dr Lowitja O’Donoghue AC CBE DSG, our namesake and co-patron, who would have turned 93 years of age.

From today forward, 1 August will be recognised annually by Lowitja Institute and the Lowitja O’Donoghue Foundation as Lowitja O’Donoghue Day.

This annual celebration will honour Dr O’Donoghue’s life and legacy, whilst also commemorating her birthday and the anniversary of the establishment of her Foundation.

Lowitja O’Donoghue Day is a call to action for individuals, communities, and organisations to take time to reflect on Dr O’Donoghue’s mission and values, and to create positive impact in their own communities in her memory.

1 August will become our day of action as a movement that walks in the footsteps of an iconic trailblazer, widely recognised as ‘the greatest Aboriginal leader of the modern era.’

We invite you to join us in celebrating the inaugural Lowitja O’Donoghue Day by sharing our post and asking your friends and networks to help spread the word.

From this day forward, we also invite you to mark 1 August – Lowitja O’Donoghue Day in your calendars.

The Lowitja O’Donoghue Foundation celebrates three years since its establishment on Dr O’Donoghue’s 90th birthday on 1 August 2022. The Foundation carries forward Dr O’Donoghue’s legacy of courageous Aboriginal leadership and her vision of empowering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to create meaningful change.
