Victoria does not presently have an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Human Research Ethics Committee. In 2005, the then Onemda VicHealth Koori Health Unit at the University of Melbourne completed a partnership project that aimed to find out how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people could have more control of the ethics of research that is carried out in, or impacts on, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in Victoria.
The outcome of the project was to develop options for the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO) to consider. Six models were developed, as outlined in the Victorian Aboriginal Ethics Project Report.
