The Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Council (AH&MRC) Ethics Committee operates as a HREC under the NHMRC legislation. The role of the AH&MRC Ethics Committee is to assess research proposals affecting the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities in NSW, and to monitor the collection of data on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health to ensure activities will be conducted ethically.

The Aboriginal Medical Service Western Sydney (AMSWS) has established a community-based Human Research Ethics Committee, the AMSWS Ethics Committee. AMSWS is a community-controlled health service, run by a community-elected board. The service area of AMSWS is that of the Deerubbin Land Council, and includes the area of Sydney metropolitan and the Blue Mountains bounded by Auburn to the east, Windsor to the north, Liverpool to the south, and Lithgow in the west. The AMSWS Ethics Committee is the only committee based in this area that is sanctioned and overseen by an Aboriginal community-elected board and is registered and approved by the NHMRC.
