Indigenous Health and Education: Exploring the connections
This paper sets out to explore the connection between education levels and health outcomes among Indigenous people living in a Top End community in the Northern Territory. Although research in other parts of the world has revealed a link between high levels of education and good health outcomes in Indigenous populations, there has been little research into this correlation in Australia. Using a collaborative research approach, the researchers find that while community members value education, they also feel not enough respect is paid to their own traditional knowledge. The paper concludes that a formal Western education needs to work side by side with traditional knowledge systems in order to positively influence health outcomes.
