Mr Chris Lee
Manager, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander engagement
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health

Who is your mob?: Gulumerridjin (Larrakia), Wardaman (Mother) and Karrajarri (Father).
Gulumerridjin (Larrakia) people are Saltwater people who are the Traditional Custodians of Darwin in the NT. I'm a member of the Cubillo clan through my Mother who also enjoys Wardaman heritage from South of Katherine in the NT. My father is from the Karrajarri nation located just South of Broome in WA. They are also Saltwater people.

Expertise in relation to the COVID-19 outbreaks and/or its impacts: During COVID-19, many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have disengaged in their diabetes and health care due to social distancing, fear of exposure to the virus and serious COVID-19 illness, and other reasons.

The general COVID-19 advice and messages around social distancing for First Nations people has been effective, however there is a significant gap in advice and messages for First Nations people around diabetes and the need to maintain diabetes routine care during the pandemic.

As the Manager, Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander engagement at Diabetes Australia I've led the design and development of culturally and linguistically responsive COVID specific messaging and awareness campaigns across print, radio, social media and Aborignal and Torre sStrait Islander media and communications.
