Deb has worked in research, teaching and evaluation in academic and Aboriginal community settings since 2002.

Prior to her appointment at the Lowitja Institute, Deb was a Research Fellow at the Centre for Excellence in Indigenous Tobacco Control, based at the Onemda VicHealth Koori Health Unit (The University of Melbourne). Deb has worked as Research Assistant supporting Professor Ian Anderson (then Research Director of the CRCAH) and as Project Officer for the Leaders in Indigenous Medical Education Network (then Medical Deans Indigenous Health Project). She has also worked as an anthropologist in Native Title in the Northern Territory

Deb holds a master degree in public policy and management and Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree.
