This is the table of contents from Researching Indigenous Health: A Practical Guide for Researchers. Click on each chapter for a summary of the contents as well as links to case stories and resources.
Part A: Indigenous Health Research in Context
Chapter 1: Setting the Scene for Research
Chapter 2: Principles in Indigenous Health Research
Chapter 3: Indigenous Frameworks and Methods for Research
Chapters 1 to 3 summarise factors that make health research in Indigenous settings different to non-Indigenous health research. The chapters summarise historical issues, knowledge traditions and big issues that impact on research, including the reform agenda for Indigenous research. Indigenous research values and ethics are explained using examples of good practice. Information about theoretical approaches to Indigenous research highlights the work of Indigenous scholars.
Part B: Doing research that makes a difference
Chapter 4: Relationships in Indigenous health research
Chapter 5: Using Research for Change
Chapter 6: Building Capacity through Research
Chapters 4 to 6 focus on relationships, knowledge exchange and capacity building - essential for research practice that addresses the issues raised in Part A. The chapters use real examples and stories from experienced researchers, Indigenous research participants and research users to explain how to build these elements into research projects.
Part C: Designing and managing a successful research project
Chapter 7: Setting the Research Question
Chapter 8: Planning the Project
Chapter 9: Collecting, Managing and Interpreting Data
Chapter 10: Methods for Reporting and Dissemination
Chapters 7 to 10 guide readers through the processes needed to plan, develop and conduct a research project that takes into account the research context and includes the elements needed to make a difference. Step-by-step guidelines, examples and stories show how health research can be done in ways that increase Indigenous participation and control, and result in research outcomes that have practical use and benefit.
Part D: Policies and structures for Indigenous health research (online only)
Chapter 11: Over the last decade policies and structures have been set up that aim to shift power to the Indigenous community sector, build Indigenous research capacity and foster good research in Indigenous health. This section gives an overview of these policies and structures at a national level, at an institutional level, and as collaborative mechanisms. It aims to give researchers a sense of their work being part of a broader Indigenous health research agenda.
