Education and Training

The Lowitja Institute and CRCATSIH aim to develop the capacity of the research workforce in the field of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.

The Education and Training program will support research skills development and identify opportunities for higher degree student participation in each research program activity. It will also work with stakeholders to build their capacity to identify and implement relevant research findings in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health sector.

Indigenous Researchers Handbook workshop 2009Education and training activities will include:

  • A Master of Public Health collaboration in Indigenous Health

In 2008 the CRC for Aboriginal Health funded a feasibility study that developed the framework for a national Indigenous health specialisation in the Master of Public Health (MPH). We will be implementing this MPH through a collaboration facilitated by the CRC for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health. This collaboration will provide the infrastructure for the delivery of postgraduate units in Indigenous health research and knowledge management on an award and non-award basis to our end-user workforce in health services, policy settings and research institutions.

We will also contribute to building pathways for Indigenous people in research and knowledge management with activities focused on Indigenous primary care workers and Indigenous research higher degree students.

  • Developing Researching Indigenous Health: A practical guide for researchers. This resource will focus on the specific skills and knowledge for carrying out research in the field of Indigenous health.  It is due out in late 2010 and will be a companion volume to Supporting Indigenous Researchers: A practical guide for supervisors (2009).
  • Research higher degree students and graduates aligned to research programs.

  • Supporting Indigenous research higher degree students to attend the annual Summer School for Indigenous Postgraduate Students.

  • Supporting AHCSA in the delivery of graduates in Certificate IV Indigenous Research Capacity Building.

  • Developing knowledge, tools and resources for Indigenous health workforce reform.

The Lowitja Institute will build on the Education and Training achievements of the CRC for Aboriginal Health. To read more about the CRCAH’s program and student outcomes, please go to CRCAH Education and Training Programs.
