In-kind contributions
In-kind contributions
An in-kind contribution is any activity other than cash money that an organisation contributes to the CRC for Aboriginal Health, and which is in keeping with the research programs or objectives as outlined in the CRC for Aboriginal Health's Business Plan.
In-kind activities might include research, research transfer activities, courses, student research, education and training activities, capacity development activities, administration and meetings.
Partner organisations of the CRC for Aboriginal Health are committed to contributing a certain amount of in-kind hours, which is converted into a dollar value and reported to the funding body, the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST). Overall, the dollar value for partners' in-kind commitments is almost three times as much as their cash contributions.
In-kind projects—bringing together larger bodies of work
In-kind projects are a very important part of the CRC for Aboriginal Health's approach to research. Thanks to the contribution of in-kind projects by core partners, the CRC for Aboriginal Health is able to bring together larger bodies of work that, as a whole, will be of greater value than lots of individual projects. For example, it is able to bring together work around kidney disease, which includes:
- healthy lifestyle programs to prevent chronic diseases such as diabetes;
- disease-control programs aimed at preventing one of the major causes of renal failure, glomerulonephritis;
- self-management programs that train health workers in how to work with patients and their families to prevent and manage chronic disease;
- how health services can organise themselves better to prevent and manage chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease;
- how the health system can better support Aboriginal people in considering the option of renal transplant;
- ways that Aboriginal cultural priorities can influence the delivery of renal dialysis to allow patients to maintain their family, country and cultural connections and enjoy a good quality of life.
