Call for Expressions of Interest: two workforce policy projects
The Lowitja Institute seeks expressions of interest for one or both of two new projects: 1) Model for flexible career pathways into the health professions for existing Aboriginal health staff and 2) The ‘new workforce’ and allied and para-professional roles for Aboriginal people.
These projects have been shaped by recommendations from a Workforce Roundtable held in September 2011, involving practitioners, educators and researchers with an interest in the Aboriginal health workforce. It is anticipated that the projects will commence in April 2012 and be completed within 18-24 months. Interested parties are invited to consider the projects as defined in the below attachment, and respond to the request for Expressions of Interest.

Administration Support Officer vacancy: closes 16 January
The Lowitja Institute is seeking to employ a suitably qualified Administration Support Officer to provide reception and administration support duties to the Melbourne Office. In addition, the position will provide corporate services support, including making travel arrangements, to other Institute staff in regional offices when required.
The successful applicant will have relevant qualifications and administration experience, together with a demonstrated understanding of how a busy office works. You must also be able to operate effectively within a team and have the ability to build and manage effective stakeholder relationships and partnerships.

New Chief Executive Officer
The Board of the Lowitja Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms Lyn Brodie as the new Chief Executive Officer. Ms Brodie took up the position at the Institute’s head office in Melbourne on 5 January 2012.
Previously the CEO at the Gandel Charitable Trust, Lyn has also held executive positions at Zoos Victoria, the Baker Heart Research Institute (now Baker IDI) and Cabrini Health. Her career spans both the corporate and not-for-profit sectors, with experience and expertise in strategy, operations, business development and marketing.
Lyn holds a Master of Business Administration from the Mt Eliza Business School, is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and has completed 'Governing for Not for Profit Excellence' at Harvard Business School. Lyn is also currently a non-executive Director of Relationships Australia (Vic).
The Board considers itself extremely fortunate to have secured Lyn as Chief Executive Officer and looks forward to working with her during this important period of the Institute’s development. Her contact details and biography are available on our Contact Us page.
The Board would like to thank the Chief Operating Officer, David Morgan, for his work as Acting Chief Executive over the last four months.
Legally Invisible Report
We are pleased to announce a new report: Legally Invisible — How Australian Laws Impede Stewardship and Governance for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health by Genevieve Howse.
This paper explains the options available for Australian governments to articulate and allocate responsibilities for the health and health care of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in an enduring, reliable form. It was commissioned by the Lowitja Institute – Australia’s National Institute for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research in response to widespread recognition of problems in the policy and administrative arrangements for health and health care for Australia’s First Peoples, including lack of clarity about the responsibilities of governments at various levels.

Revitalizing Health for All Report
The Lowitja Institute is pleased to release the Teasdale-Corti regional commentary: Revitalizing Health for All.
The three Australian projects of the Teasdale-Corti Global Health Research Partnership Program are: Victorian Aboriginal Health Service Ltd (VAHS), Melbourne, Victoria—Forty Years of Comprehensive Primary Health Care; Central Australian Aboriginal Congress Inc. (Congress), Alice Springs, Northern Territory—Ingkintja, Male Health Program; and Urapuntja Health Service (UHS), Utopia, Northern Territory—Outstation Health Care. The commentary highlights common themes and lessons in respect to the Revitalising Health for All project in the context of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health in Australia. It was published by the Lowitja Institute.

Art into Health booklet
The Lowitja Institute has produced a new publication Art into Health: Puntu Palyarrikuwanpa (Aboriginal Men Becoming Well) by Dr Brian McCoy.
This beautiful full-colour booklet describes a unique collection of 15 paintings through which Aboriginal men from the Western Desert offer their perspectives on their lives and wellbeing through art. Using contemporary techniques and methods, the artists present a wide range of narratives thatlink ancient ways of understanding and describing their world today. The collection, therefore, provides an important and valuable body of knowledge about Aboriginal health.

Poster for ASMR Conference
The Lowitja Institute's Liz Izquierdo presented a poster on the work of Program 1: Healthy Start, Healthy Life at the ASMR 50th National Scientific Conference: Indigenous Health - Action on Prevention on 13-16 November 2011 in Cairns.

Managing Two Worlds Together - New reports
The Lowitja Institute has published 6 new Managing Two Worlds Together reports. The project explores rural and remote Aboriginal people's patient journeys and what happens when they come to Adelaide for hospital care. It aims to add to existing knowledge of what works well and what needs improvement in the system of care for Aboriginal patients from rural and remote areas of South Australia (and parts of the Northern Territory). Workforce Roundtable Report released
In September 2011, the Lowitja Institute held a Workfoce Roundtable in Brisbane. Experts from the practice, policy and research arenas convened to shape a research agenda that is relevant to current needs and policy dilemmas. Notes of the roundtable are now available. These notes include an overview by Judith Dwyer and presentations by Cindy Shannon, Romalie Mokak and Tom Brideson.

Job Vacancies: Chief Executive and Director of Research
The Lowitja institute has vacancies for a Chief Executive and a Director of Research. We are seeking individuals with leadership skills to work in positions that will make a real difference in the area of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health. These two full time roles are based in Melbourne.
Chief Executive:
- Will lead the organisation in a period of transition to a new funding model.
- Will build strong relationships with associated organisations and critical partners.
- Will inspire and lead our team.
Director of Research:
- A new full time role at the Institute.
- Will be an eminent researcher of Professorial standing.
- Will innovate, shape and lead a research agenda suitable for the Institute.
- Remuneration will be commensurate with University Academic Level E.
- An adjunct Professorial appointment at a relevant university will be organised.

Call for Expressions of Interest for proposal support
The Lowitja Institute is calling for expressions of interest from researchers seeking support in the development of a research grant application on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander maternal and child health.
The project is to be one that will lead to improvements in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander maternal and child health, and fits with the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Equality Council (NIHEC) recommendations.
The expected benefits for applicants are:
- Improve the quality of the research proposal and its chances of being successful
- Receive feedback from qualified researchers and end-users in designing and refining the project
- Maximise the project’s likelihood of having an impact on maternal and child health care
- Connect to a network of people and organisations working in similar research contexts.

Gail Garvey appointed new Program Leader for Program 1: Healthy Start, Healthy Life
The Lowitja Institute is very pleased to announce that Associate Professor Gail Garvey has been appointed Program Leader for Program 1 Healthy Start Healthy Life and that Professor Ross Bailie will continue his support in an advisory capacity.
Gail is a Kamilaroi woman whose family originated from Moree, Western NSW. During her Masters degree program, Gail researched the factors affecting the career progression of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctors; her PhD explored the reasons why Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people choose to work in health and study health programs. Also in her rich CV are the Assistant Deanship of Indigenous Health and Education at Newcastle University, the position of Head of the QIMR Indigenous Health Research Program, and now Head of the Cancer Epidemiology group at the Menzies School of Health Research. From December 2011, Gail will also take over the leadership of Epidemiology and Health Systems Division at Menzies.

Teasdale Corti - Revitalising Health for All project
Information and resources can now be found on a new web page on the Revitalizing Health for All: International Indigenous Representative Group. This project documented the importance of Comprehensive Primary Health Care in improving the health of the world’s Indigenous and marginalised peoples.
The project was started in 2008 under the Cooperative Centre for Aboriginal Health. In the Lowitja Institute it has been managed as part of the Program 2 activities.

Appointment of Executive Director for Research
We are pleased to announce that Associate Professor Janelle Stirling has accepted a short fixed-term appointment to the position of Executive Director for Research at the Lowitja Institute, commencing 24 October.
Janelle has had a long association with the CRC programs, starting in 2001 when she took on the role of Coordinator Indigenous Health Research at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research. Janelle has had a variety of roles in the three iterations of the CRC, including Program Leader and Board Member. More recently, she has worked at the University Centre of Rural Health – North Coast.
Janelle brings strong research and research capacity building to the Lowitja Institute and we welcome her to the Melbourne office! Her contact details will be available on our Staff Page.
